La Articulaci\u00f3n Temporomandibular (ATM) es aquella que permite los movimientos mandibulares, por lo tanto es esencial en el funcionamiento adecuado de la boca. Son varios los factores que pueden provocar alteraciones en esta articulaci\u00f3n y sus estructuras asociadas: malos h\u00e1bitos (chicle, onicofagia, etc), alteraciones de postura de cabeza y cuello, traumatismos, alteraciones de la oclusi\u00f3n (el \u201cengranaje\u201d de los dientes), bruxismo.<\/p>\n
El bruxismo es la acci\u00f3n en que se realiza el h\u00e1bito inconsciente de apriete y\/o rechinamiento de los dientes, normalmente durante el sue\u00f1o, a veces adem\u00e1s en vigilia. Esto puede traer como consecuencia a nivel dentario la fractura de dientes, o su desgaste, muchas veces asociado a aumento de sensibilidad. Estas fuerzas extremas del bruxismo adem\u00e1s pueden da\u00f1ar los m\u00fasculos que hacen el movimiento o alterar la articulaci\u00f3n incluso provocando modificaciones en su forma. Por lo tanto es muy importante el adecuado diagnostico e intercepci\u00f3n de los factores mencionados por un especialista, a quien se deber\u00eda acudir ante la aparici\u00f3n de signos y s\u00edntomas como:<\/p>\n
